Usability and user oriented process models for Environmental Management Information Systems

If new developments of Environmental Management Information Systems (EMIS) only focus on its functionality, the whole potential from new users being able to reach the given functionality would never be exhausted. The users of new software are often trained by courses to learn it. A more successful way is to integrate the user’s perceptions at a relatively early stage, in the design and development phase.

Deficits in human-machine interaction can be reduced if the developers are able to get information on how the users are using their systems, because when observing real users during their use of a software the developer is able to understand the perspective of the user. Software products with a higher focus on usability are more intuitive, decrease the effort when learning the software system and lead to a competitive advantage for the providers of services and products in the future. The most effective way is not only to do design the software for the user but also adjust the whole process model along the users.

The goal of the workshop is to identify and locate shortages and deficits in usability and user experience which exists especially in EMIS. Where are the potentials for operators of EMIS with user oriented Software? Which technical innovations can decrease the deficit in human-machine interaction in the future?

Possible Workshop topics can be for instance:

  • Usability studies for EMIS
  • Methods and tools for improving human-machine interaction
  • User oriented processes
  • Intuitive learning of ICT

The workshop will give a platform to present results of actual works and to discuss them with the participants of the conference.
